Why Choose Glass Baby Bottles?

Before plastic became so commonplace glass baby bottles were the norm.

The sleek and modern appearance makes them intriguing, but there are other compelling reasons to consider using glass bottles.

Glass is natural, but it can break.

Glass is a pure, natural material and it's easy to clean and sterilize. These are good qualities for any baby product, but especially anything used for feeding. Glass doesn't absorb odors, or leach chemicals.

Of course there's always the risk of breakage when you're dealing with glass and since it's heavier than plastic it can seem bulky. I personally had a glass bottle fall from our vehicle and shatter in a parking lot, when occasional dropping happened in our home without so much as a crack.

Glass bottles are sturdier than you might think though and many brands are finding ways to reduce the chances of breakage with silicone sleeves or bumpers. One more thing to consider though, is that glass bottles can be more costly than their glass counterparts.

Plastic is cheap, but it breaks down.

Maybe you're wondering why you should consider glass bottles when plastic is so readily available and cheap? The problem is, over time, a plastic bottle begins to break down and studies have shown that harmful chemicals can seep into the contents of the bottle. This is especially true at high temperatures and a baby bottle is washed or heated in hot water quite frequently.

At first it was BPA and then everything moved to being BPA free, then along came a whole slew of other potentially dangerous chemicals. But, the keyword there is "potentially" as the FDA has stated that many of the levels aren't high enough to cause harm, but many are still skeptical.

There is more than one "right" way to raise a child. That is the beauty of parenting. I chose to use glass baby bottles with my second child, but does that mean my first didn't turn out just fine? Not at all. Every parent must make the best choice for their own situation.
