Every new mom I have sewn these homemade burp cloths for, just raves about them. They're totally stylish on one side and utilitarian on the other.
When I started making these custom burp cloths a few years ago I used a cute cotton print for one side, and soft terry cloth for the other. But chenille may be a better choice for the back side because it's super absorbent and even softer!
No pinning or pattern really required. You'll be sewing nothing but straight lines! This is a quick and easy project. The finished size is approximately 9"x16". These burp cloths will easily become mom's favorite! Below are our instructions to make custom burp cloths for a cuddly new baby.
Pre-wash and iron your fabric before laying out both your cotton and terry cloth right sides together and trim excess to make them the same size.
Measure and mark your fabric into approximately 10"x17" rectangles. A yard of standard 45" fabric will allow four across and two down.
Cut both layers of fabric along the measurements you have just made.
You now have 8 pairs of 2-layer rectangles. Sew each pair with a 1/2" seam allowance leaving about a 3" gap for turning.
Turn the burp cloth and press with an iron being sure to fold in the gap you used to turn.
Now do a top stich 1/4" from the edge around the entire burp cloth.
Repeat with the others and viola! You have completed an adorable matching set of custom burp cloths.
